Cartagena Fiestas

Spanish towns are famous for their festivals (fiestas), and Cartagena is certainly no exception. There are a plethora of events throughout the year, some larger than others. Here we list some of the most popular, and typically the larger fiestas to look out for:

La Virgen del Carmen

The 16th of July is a special day for the local sailors. This is the day that they offer tribute to their lady saint, La Virgen del Carmen. This occasion is celebrated by constructing a stage in the heart of the port area where the actual gorge will be held. At night, several ornamented boats will be launched out to the sea, and this moment is simply a must-see.

Romeria

Romeria is a pilgrimage done every August 25th leading towards the nearby Hermitage of San Gines de la Jara.

Carthagineses y Romanos

The Carthagineses y Romanos or Carthaginians and Romans is the largest fiesta in Cartagena. Celebrated during the month of September, expect the streets of Cartagena to be at their grandest. This event is supposed to bring back the ancient times when Cartagena was involved in the 2nd Punic war. The locals creatively portray the endless bloodshed between Carthaginians and Romans by wearing impressive costumes and erecting a full camp that looks like the Old Cartagena. There is of course a Hannibal Barca portrayal, and his elephants convene with the Romans in the form of colorful street parades, music, and continuous dancing. Fireworks displays are always part of the celebration. The date for which these events are celebrated changes every year. Thus it will be best to contact the Cartagena Tourist Office or your travel agency prior to scheduling your trip if you are yearning to witness the Carthagineses y Romanos.
