The medium-sized town of San Javier is to be found in an ideal spot just off the coast of the Mar Menor. It is just a 20 to 30 minute drive away from the historic cities of Murcia and Cartagena. San Javier is best known as the location of the San Javier International Airport. The said airport (IATA Airport Code MJV) is a military air base and passenger facility operated by the AENA (Aeropuertos Espanoles y Navegacion Aerea, or Spanish Airports and Aereal Navigation) association. The airport is flown by a number of charter airlines.
San Javier is a Costa Calida town, and its population is just over 20,000. However this small number can and does increase dramatically especially during the summer season. The town is already undergoing several government improvements. There are also a number of good restaurants and interesting shops between San Javier and the other coastal towns of Murcia.
